Quick Product Summary: Sika Black Jack 906 Bitumen Roofing Emulsion 5L is a water-based bitumen roof coating for general roof waterproofing, metal protection and vapour barrier work. It is a medium brushing consistency emulsion which dries to a black, flexible coating.
Sika Black Jack 906 Bitumen Roofing Emulsion is a stable bitumen and water emulsion designed for general waterproofing of roofs. It dries from brown to a black flexible coating and can also be used to help protect suitable metal surfaces against corrosion.
The 5L tin is suited to smaller roof waterproofing jobs, roof maintenance, localised coating work and repair preparation where a water-based bitumen emulsion is preferred over a solvent-based coating. It may be applied to damp surfaces, but it should not be applied to wet surfaces or used where rain is imminent.
Where This 5L Roofing Emulsion Fits
This product is suited to general roof waterproofing and protective coating work on suitable prepared surfaces. It is different from Sika Black Jack 905, which is a fibre-reinforced all-weather roof coating. Sika Black Jack 906 is a water-based bitumen roofing emulsion with water clean-up while wet.
- General waterproofing of suitable roof surfaces.
- Use on concrete and fibre cement surfaces.
- Use on roofing felt and mastic asphalt.
- Use on corrugated iron and suitable metal sheeting.
- Use on slates and tiles where suitable.
- Use on lead, copper and zinc where compatible.
- Metal protection for pipes, structural steelwork and other metallic equipment.
- Vapour barrier use for cold storage rooms, mushroom houses and similar installations.
Why Choose The 5L Size
Choose the 5L tin for smaller roof coating work, maintenance jobs, repair areas and situations where a larger trade-size tin would be more than needed. It is a practical size for roof waterproofing, patching around prepared areas and protective coating work on suitable surfaces.
For holes, imperfections or damaged roof areas, repair the surface first before coating. For loose felt, use a suitable roof felt adhesive before applying the emulsion. For porous surfaces, a compatible bitumen and flashing primer may be needed before coating.
Key Performance Benefits
- Water-Based Bitumen Emulsion: Stable bitumen and water emulsion of medium brushing consistency.
- Dries Black: Applies brown and dries to a black flexible coating.
- Roof Waterproofing: Designed for general waterproofing of suitable roofs.
- May Be Applied To Damp Surfaces: Suitable for damp surfaces, but not wet surfaces.
- Non-Flammable: Water and bitumen emulsion formulation.
- Water Clean-Up: Tools can be cleaned with soap and water before the product dries.
- Metal Protection: Helps protect pipes, structural steelwork and other metallic equipment against corrosion.
- Vapour Barrier Use: Suitable for cold storage rooms, mushroom houses and similar installations.
How To Use Sika Black Jack 906 Roofing Emulsion
Always read the current Sika product data sheet and safety data sheet before use. Application depends on roof condition, surface porosity, temperature, weather and whether repairs are needed before coating.
- Step 1: Make sure the surface is clean, sound and free from dust, loose material and contaminants that may affect adhesion.
- Step 2: Remove green growth before coating. Sika recommends using Sika Mouldbuster where green growth is present.
- Step 3: Repair holes, loose felt, loose slates, loose tiles or unstable areas before coating.
- Step 4: Fill holes or imperfections with a suitable bitumen trowel mastic where required.
- Step 5: Stick down loose felt with a suitable roof felt adhesive where needed.
- Step 6: Prime porous surfaces with a compatible bitumen and flashing primer and allow it to dry before applying the emulsion.
- Step 7: Stir well before use. The product is brown when applied and dries black.
- Step 8: Apply by brush in a minimum of two coats.
- Step 9: Apply coats at right angles to each other and allow approximately 24 hours between coats.
- Step 10: For maximum durability, the second coat can be reinforced with an open woven glass fibre membrane where suitable.
When This Product Is Not The Best Fit
This product is a water-based bitumen roofing emulsion. It is not a roof felt adhesive, flashing tape, trowel mastic, solvent-based coating, liquid damp proof membrane or structural roof repair product.
- Not for wet surfaces: It may be applied to damp surfaces, but not wet surfaces.
- Not for imminent rain: Do not apply externally if rain is expected within 5 hours of application.
- Protect until cured: Protect the coating from rain and frost until cured.
- Not for unsound roofs: No roof coating should be expected to repair a roof that is not structurally sound and stable.
- Not for later solvent contact: Do not use where later contact with solvents is likely.
- Overpainting caution: Bitumen may bleed through later paint systems, so compatibility and primer requirements should be checked first.

Safety: Read the latest Sika safety data sheet before use. Avoid unnecessary skin and eye contact and follow the handling, storage and disposal guidance on the product packaging and safety data sheet. Although this product is a water-based bitumen emulsion, suitable care should still be taken during preparation, application and clean-up.
Delivery Note For Tinned Products: This item is supplied in a metal tin. Small dents can sometimes occur during courier handling, especially with heavier liquid coating products. Minor dents usually do not affect the contents or performance of the product and are not treated as a return reason. Please only order this tinned product if this is acceptable.
Products To Help With Preparation, Use Or Clean-Up
For porous surfaces, use Sika Black Jack 902 Bitumen and Flashing Primer 1L before coating where the surface requires priming.
For holes, imperfections or localised patching before coating, use a suitable bitumen trowel mastic such as Sika Black Jack 903 where available.
For loose roof felt before coating, use Sika Black Jack 904 Roof Felt Adhesive 5L where felt needs bonding before the roof emulsion is applied.
To prolong the effective life of the dried coating, Sika recommends overcoating with Sika Black Jack 907 Solar Reflective Roof Paint 5L where suitable.
For clean-up while the material is still wet, use soap and water. For general cleaning after preparation and handling, Sika Everbuild Heavy Duty Textured Wonder Wipes can help clean hands, tools and suitable surfaces.
