Sika Black Jack 904 Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive 5L is a cold-applied, oxidised bitumen-based adhesive for planned roof felt bonding, repeated lap sealing and mineral chipping work. It is used on prepared roofing felt, metal, concrete and wood where a larger working quantity is needed across multiple roof sections.
The 5 litre tin is suited to wider repair areas, larger patch sections, multiple felt overlaps and organised roof maintenance where the work needs to be carried out in planned sections. It is suitable for roofers, builders, property maintenance teams and competent DIY users carrying out structured roof repair work.
Planned Use For Larger Roof Areas
This larger roof felt adhesive is used when a roof repair job needs repeated application across several prepared areas.
- Bonding roofing felt to prepared metal, concrete, wood or existing roofing felt across larger repair sections.
- Sealing multiple felt laps, roll ends, edge details and overlap areas.
- Sticking down loose felt after the roof surface has been cleaned, checked and made suitable for bonding.
- Embedding mineral chippings into the wet adhesive film on the final felt layer.
- Maintaining wider flat roof sections with a cold-applied bitumen adhesive.
- Cold gritting on suitable roof areas up to a 10 degree slope.
Key Performance Benefits
- Larger Working Quantity: Supports repeated application across several roof repair sections.
- Planned Section Work: Helps organise adhesive application across wider or repeated repair areas.
- Cold Roof Application: Bonds roofing felt without hot works when used in line with manufacturer guidance.
- Multi-Section Roof Use: Suitable for felt bonding, lap sealing and mineral chipping work on compatible prepared surfaces.
- Prepared Substrate Bond: Designed for roofing felt, metal, concrete and wood that have been cleaned and made stable.
- Temperature-Responsive Film: Forms a tough flexible bitumen film that hardens and softens with changing temperatures.
Why Choose This Roof Felt Adhesive
Choose Sika Black Jack 904 5L when the job involves a wider working area, multiple felt laps or repeated application across prepared roof sections. It suits planned maintenance where the roof is being worked through methodically rather than treated as a single small repair point.
This size is useful when the job benefits from organising the roof into manageable areas, applying adhesive consistently and keeping the repair process moving.
How It Fits Into The Job
This adhesive is used once the roof has been assessed, cleaned and divided into manageable working areas before the felt or mineral chippings are applied.
- Step 1: Prepare the roof sections by removing dirt, dust, grease, rust, loose paint, loose felt and unstable material.
- Step 2: Apply the adhesive by brush or mop in controlled working areas and allow tack to develop where required.
- Step 3: Roll, press or bed the felt into place, or apply chippings while the adhesive film is ready for bonding.
Quick Use Guide
Use only on compatible roof surfaces and follow the current manufacturer technical data sheet before application. For larger jobs, work in manageable areas so the adhesive can be covered correctly before the surface is left exposed.
- Stir the adhesive thoroughly before use and during application.
- Check all working sections are stable, clean and free from dust, grease, rust, loose paint and loose felt.
- Repair cracks, holes and loose felt before applying adhesive to the roof area.
- Prime porous concrete, cement and lightweight concrete screeds where required, then allow the primer to dry before applying felt.
- Apply by brush or mop and leave open for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on conditions, to allow tack to develop.
- Lay the felt into the adhesive film carefully, then press, rub or roll it down to improve contact and exclude trapped air.
- Use felt laps of at least 75 mm at edges and at least 150 mm at roll ends.
- On timber roof structures, nail down the first layer of felt before bonding later felt layers.
- For cold gritting, apply chippings immediately into the wet film and avoid leaving exposed black adhesive.
- Allow 24 hours drying time depending on conditions before checking adhesion.
- For cold gritting work, leave the completed surface dressing for at least 72 hours before lightly brushing away excess chippings.
- Clean tools immediately after use with Sika Wonder Wipes, white spirit or a suitable cleaner.
Safety: Wear protective gloves, eye protection and suitable work clothing when handling this bitumen roof adhesive. Use good ventilation, avoid breathing vapour or spray, keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources, and store securely in line with manufacturer guidance.
Please note: As with many tinned coating products, the container may arrive with dents from transport. Please do not purchase this item if a dented tin would be unsuitable for you, as minor transit dents are not a valid reason for return.
