Quick Product Summary: Sika Black Jack 905 Fibre Reinforced Roof Coating 5L is an all-weather black bitumen roof coating for waterproofing and re-sealing suitable roof coverings, non-plastic guttering and structural steelwork. The fibre-reinforced formula is brush applied and dries to a tough black protective finish.
Sika Black Jack 905 All Weather Fibre Reinforced Roof Coating is a solvent-based, full-bodied black bitumen compound with added fibres for reinforcement. It is designed for waterproofing and re-sealing suitable roofing surfaces.
The 5L tin is a practical size for roof maintenance, repair work and smaller coating jobs where a brush-applied bitumen coating is needed without moving straight to a larger trade-size tin. It is suited to waterproofing work on suitable asphalt roofs, built-up felt roofs, concrete roof decks, cement sheeting, metal sheeting, slates and tiles.
Where This 5L Roof Coating Fits
This 5L roof coating is suited to repair and maintenance work where a black fibre-reinforced coating is more suitable than a tape, sealant cartridge or trowel-applied mastic.
- Waterproofing and re-sealing suitable roof coverings.
- Use on asphalt roofs and built-up felt roofs.
- Use on concrete roof decks and cement sheeting.
- Use on suitable metal sheeting, including iron, steel, zinc and lead.
- Use on suitable slates and tiles.
- Waterproofing non-plastic guttering where compatible.
- Protecting suitable structural steelwork.
- Use as a vapour barrier on suitable walls and roofs.
Why Choose The 5L Size
Choose the 5L tin for smaller roof coating jobs, maintenance repairs and planned waterproofing work where a larger 25L tin would be more than needed. It is useful for garages, sheds, outbuildings, localised roof areas and general repair work on suitable prepared surfaces.
For narrow edges, overlaps or flashing strips, a self-adhesive flashing tape may be the better option. For deep cracks, small holes or awkward patching work, a trowel-applied bitumen mastic may be more suitable. For broader coating and waterproofing, Sika Black Jack 905 is the brush-applied roof coating option.
Key Performance Benefits
- Fibre-Reinforced Formula: Added fibres help reinforce the bitumen coating film.
- All-Weather Roof Coating: Designed for external roofing waterproofing and repair work where rain resistance soon after application is important.
- Resistant To Rain Wash-Off: The coating is resistant to wash-off by rain almost immediately after application.
- Brush Applied: Suitable for brush application on correctly prepared surfaces.
- Tough Black Coating: Dries to a tough black protective finish.
- Roofing And Guttering Use: Suitable for many roofing applications and non-plastic guttering.
- Steelwork Protection: Can be used on suitable structural steelwork.
How To Use Sika Black Jack 905 Roof Coating
Always read the current Sika product data sheet and safety data sheet before use. Application depends on the roof type, surface condition, temperature and whether cracks, blisters or decayed areas need repair first.
- Step 1: Inspect the roof before coating. A coating product should not be used as a substitute for repairing an unsound or unstable roof structure.
- Step 2: Replace or re-fix cracked, broken, slipped or missing slates, tiles, sheets or other roof coverings before coating.
- Step 3: Make sure the surface is sound, stable and clean. Remove loose debris, dirt, dust, grease, moss and unstable material.
- Step 4: Fill cracks in felt or asphalt before coating. Wider defects may need a suitable bitumen mastic before the roof coating is applied.
- Step 5: Stir the product well before use.
- Step 6: Apply by brush to the prepared surface.
- Step 7: For normal roof coating work, apply two coats and allow the first coat to dry before applying the second.
- Step 8: Allow sufficient drying time between coats and before further treatment.
When This Product Is Not The Best Fit
This product is a brush-applied bitumen roof coating. It is not a self-adhesive flashing tape, roof felt adhesive, trowel mastic, primer, sealant cartridge, roofing felt, membrane roll or structural repair product.
- Not for damp or wet areas: Sika advises not to apply this product to damp or wet areas. Surfaces must be free from ice and water.
- Not for plastic guttering: The product is described for guttering use as non-plastic guttering.
- Not a structural repair: Unsound roofs, broken roof coverings and unstable areas should be repaired before coating.
- Not for hidden roof light hazards: Do not coat roof lights, windows, glass or translucent sheets because they may become hidden hazards.
- Not for solvent contact areas: Do not use where later solvent contact is likely.
- Not for silage pits: Sika lists silage pits as an unsuitable application.
- Not always suitable for overpainting: Bitumen may bleed through later paint systems, so compatibility should be checked first.

Products To Help With Preparation, Use Or Clean-Up
For porous, dusty or difficult bitumen-based surfaces, use Sika Black Jack 902 Bitumen and Flashing Primer 1L where the surface requires priming before coating or repair work.
For edge details, overlaps and flashing repairs where a brush-applied roof coating is not the best fit, use Sika Black Jack 100mm Grey Flashing Tape 10m.
For clean-up after preparation and handling, Sika Everbuild Heavy Duty Textured Wonder Wipes can help remove general grime, residue and dirt from hands, tools and suitable surfaces.
