Sika Black Jack 902 Bitumen and Flashing Primer is a thin black primer used to give a key before applying bitumen paints, roof coatings and flashing tape systems. It helps prepare suitable surfaces so bituminous coatings and flashing products can bond more effectively.

The 1 litre tin is suited to small roof preparation jobs, localised flashing work, patch repairs, edge detailing and priming smaller areas before applying compatible bitumen-based products. It can be used on suitable concrete roofs and floors, cementitious screeds and renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, mastic, wood, and weathered corrugated iron or steel.

What This Product Is Used For

This primer is used where a surface needs preparing before a compatible bitumen paint, roof coating or flashing tape is applied.

  • Priming suitable roof surfaces before bitumen coatings.
  • Preparing concrete roofs, floors, cementitious screeds and renders.
  • Priming bitumen felt, asphalt and mastic surfaces.
  • Preparing timber surfaces before compatible bituminous coatings.
  • Priming weathered corrugated iron and steel after suitable cleaning and preparation.
  • Using as a primer before applying compatible Black Jack flashing tape systems.

Key Performance Benefits

  • Thin black bitumen and flashing primer.
  • Fast drying primer for bituminous coating work.
  • Helps give a key before applying bitumen paints, roof coatings and flashing tape.
  • Suitable for use with all bituminous coatings.
  • Ready to use and should not be thinned.
  • Can be applied by brush or spray, following manufacturer guidance.

Why Choose This Bitumen Primer

Choose Sika Black Jack 902 when the job needs surface preparation before applying a bitumen paint, roof coating, flashing tape or other compatible bituminous system. It is not the main waterproofing coat itself; its job is to improve the surface key so the following product has a better prepared base.

The 1 litre size is especially useful where only a small amount of primer is needed, such as around roof details, repair areas, edges, gutters, flashing joints, felt repairs or localised coating work. For larger roof areas, calculate coverage against surface porosity before ordering.

How It Fits Into The Job

Use this primer after the surface has been inspected, cleaned and prepared, but before the final bitumen coating or flashing product is applied.

  • Step 1: Remove dirt, dust, grease, loose material, rust, moss and green growth from the surface.
  • Step 2: Make sure the surface is dry, stable and free from standing water, frost or loose contamination.
  • Step 3: Repair cracks, holes, loose felt or damaged areas before priming where required.
  • Step 4: Stir thoroughly before and during use. Do not thin the primer.
  • Step 5: Apply a thin, even coat by brush or spray, avoiding ponding or pooling.
  • Step 6: Allow the primer to dry before applying the compatible bitumen coating, roof coating or flashing tape system.

Quick Use Guide

Good preparation is important because primers work best when the surface is clean, stable and suitable for the coating system being applied afterwards.

  • Use on dry, stable and cleaned surfaces only.
  • Stir before use and during application.
  • Apply by brush or spray.
  • Do not thin the primer.
  • Avoid heavy pooling, especially when spraying.
  • Clean tools immediately after use with suitable wipes or white spirit.

Safety: This is a solvent-based primer. Wear suitable gloves and eye protection, work with good ventilation, avoid skin and eye contact, keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and ignition sources, and follow the safety data sheet before use.

Please note: This product is supplied in a tin, and minor dents may occur during transit. Dented tins are not accepted as a reason for return where the tin remains sealed, has not leaked and the contents are usable.

Compatible Products

For surface preparation, priming, small roof repairs and follow-on bitumen coating work, choose products that match the stage of the job.
