How to Safely Split Logs with an Axe

This instructional video guides you through the proper and safe technique for splitting firewood using an axe. Following the correct method helps to maintain a clean split and prevents potential injury from an improper swing.

Begin by setting up your work area. Place the log you intend to split on top of a solid chopping block or stump. The recommended height for the chopping block should bring the top of the log close to your waist level. This positioning maximises the force of the axe head and helps with accuracy.

When preparing to strike, make sure to centre the small log on the larger block. The correct swing path for the tool should be lined up so that the blade passes through the wood and continues past the chopping block, hitting the ground below. This follow-through motion is important for achieving a complete split and protecting the axe head.

The video highlights the key technique for a good split. The wrong way is to aim for the middle of the chopping block. Instead, aim to cut through the wood so your force goes into the ground under the block. This helps even tough or knotted wood split cleanly in one swing. Always keep the area around the block clear and make sure people stay away while you split wood.

This simple technique works with any log-splitting axe to process logs quickly.
