Applying Jointing Sand to Block Paving

This instructional video shows the process for applying jointing sand to block paving. First, the paved area must be entirely clean, weed-free, and dry before starting the job. The instructions specify that the joints must be up to 3mm wide and at least 50mm deep to receive the material. The sand is poured directly onto the dry surface from the bag. A long-handled brush is then used to sweep the product into the gaps between the blocks. Sweep the sand at a 45°-degree angle to help it settle deeply into the joint spaces.

The video then demonstrates, after sweeping, how to remove any excess product from the surface using the brush. Compaction is the next important step in the process, making sure that the sand is tightly packed down to create a firm bed. The compacted sand is achieved by running a vibrating plate across the entire paved area. Once compaction is complete, top up any areas of the pavement that look low or not completely filled. Sweep the additional sand into the joints and remove any remaining excess material from the surface.

The final stage of the demonstration involves wetting the surface to activate the sand. Use a hose or a small electric power-washer for this step, applying a fine, light spray to saturate the product. Allow five to ten minutes for the jointing compound to begin to set. When temperatures are higher than 20°C, a shorter wait time of three to five minutes applies. Finally, wash off any remaining product left on the top surface of the bricks.

A quick tip is to also wash away excess product from any surrounding lawns or soft landscaping. This completes the steps shown for filling and setting the paved joints.
